Speech-Language Pathology for Concussion

After a concussion, speech-language pathologists mostly treat cognitive-communication problems rather than speech itself — word-finding, following conversation, organizing thoughts and staying on track in a meeting. It is one of the most under-referred services in concussion care.

The referral gets missed because the job title is misleading. People assume speech therapy means articulation, so a patient whose difficulty is losing the thread in a three-person conversation never gets sent. That is squarely within an SLP's scope, and it is often the symptom doing the most damage to someone's working life.

Treatment is practical and strategy-based: structured techniques for word retrieval, managing conversation in noisy or multi-speaker environments, planning and organizing complex tasks, and building the external systems — notes, checklists, staged workloads — that carry the load while recovery continues.

There is meaningful overlap with neuropsychology here, and the two are complementary rather than interchangeable. Neuropsychology measures and documents the cognitive profile; speech-language pathology tends to be where the functional communication retraining happens.
